Rights National Historical Park Interior Secretary Gale Norton announced that all entrance fees to national park areas will be waived during Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 10, 11 and 12, 2001, to allow Americans to seek solace and inspiration from the nation's parks, monuments and memorials as they recover from the Sept. 11 attack on America. Accordingly, entrance to Women's Rights National Historical Park, 136 Fall Street, Seneca Falls, NY will be free during Veteran's Day weekend. The park will also offer free tours of the Elizabeth Cady Stanton House. "Our nation's parks, monuments, and memorials are an inspiration to the freedoms all Americans cherish," Secretary Norton said. "After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, many people visited special places, such as our National Parks because they offer hope and inspiration as we heal from the assault on innocent Americans and unify behind our nation's efforts to seek solace and find justice." "We have many things to be proud of this Veterans Day weekend," Secretary Norton continued. "It is important to pay tribute to the men and women who fought and gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we value and enjoy today. Also, we pay homage to unsung heroes - firefighters, police officers, medical workers and countless other Americans who worked valiantly during the last months of crisis and strife." "Americans can draw strength from national icons of freedom and peace from the magnificence of nature," National Park Service Director Fran Mainella said. "On Veterans Day weekend all national parks have waived park entrance fees. Let these treasures serve as reminders of what it means to be an American and that our nation has grown stronger and will endure and prosper. Women's Rights National Historical Park includes the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, site of the 1848 First Women's Rights Convention, and the Stanton, M'Clintock and Hunt Homes, where the convention was planned. "We welcome our neighbors and friends to reinvigorate their knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, including the vote, at the sites where women and men banded together to demand rights for women of the United States." said Vivien Rose, Acting Superintendent. The National Park Service, an Interior Department agency, manages the National Park System, which comprises 385 areas, covering more than 84 million acres in every state (except Delaware), the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. These areas include national parks, monuments, battlefields, military parks, historical parks, historic sites, lakeshores, recreation areas, scenic rivers and trails, and the White House. -30-
