John Brown's Signature

The text on the exhibit card reads:
Signature of John Brown. Violent abolitionist whose failed raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia in 1859 forever sealed the fate for a peaceful end to slavery. The failure of the raid, secretly financed in part by Elizabeth Cady Stanton's beloved cousin Gerrit Smith, caused Smith to check himself into an asylum. This signature was removed from a letter sometime after Brown's death.
