SENECA FALLS
- Whatever your musical pleasure, you're sure to hear the tunes you enjoy
during this year's Convention Days celebration, July 19-21. The four-day
event that celebrates the achievements of women begins on Thursday and
continues through Sunday.
"While we celebrate our history as the birthplace of women's rights,
we also enjoy the fun of an old-fashioned party," said Convention
Days President Mary Gratton. Families are invited to come to People's
Park for a chicken barbecue beginning at noon, children's activities,
and music for listening and dancing.
Old and new favorites will be performed by the Community Band at 7 p.m.
Friday in People's Park.
Dancing to the big band sounds of For Dancers Only will begin at 8:30
p.m. on Friday in front of The Gould. Bring a chair for listening, or
dance on State Street, which will be closed to traffic.
Teens may prefer to gather in People's Park to dance or listen to music
by a local disc jockey from 8:30 to 11 p.m. Friday.
On Saturday, Finger Lakes Girls' Choir will perform in the Wesleyan Chapel
at Women's Rights Park at 12:45 p.m. They will perform "My Favorite
Things," "The Girl I mean to Be," "Cover the World
With Love," and the "Grand Old Flag." The day will conclude
with the music of the John Puma rhythm and blues band in People's Park
from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Other events during the annual event include a 5K and 10K race sponsored
by Seneca County Chamber of Commerce beginning at 9 a.m. at Academy Square;
an open house at the National Women's Hall of Fame gift shop and library
at 76 Fall St. beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, with a program at 12:30
p.m. and the opening of Arts Along the Canal art exhibit with a reception
from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday. The exhibit continues through Aug. 17.
