SENECA FALLS - Women's Rights National Historical Park, celebrates the opening of a new exhibit with a visit from a Griot on Sunday, February 10th, at 1:00 pm, in a storytelling performance entitled, "Stories from the Front Porch."

Vanessa Johnson, of the Onondaga Historical Association, will take on the personalities of several characters, while telling stories of slavery, the Underground Railroad, John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry, and the coming of the Civil War. The stories will be narrated in the tradition of the African Griot, the oral historians of Africa who passed on a community's stories and history from one generation to the next. The public is encouraged to bring hand drums and other hand-held instruments, and to participate in the program.

The performance will mark the grand opening of a new exhibit, "Neither Ballots nor Bullets: The Contest for Civil Rights." Presented in celebration of Black History Month and Women's History Month, this exhibit will look at the relationship between the anti-slavery and women's rights movements, and will examine how each dealt with the approach of the Civil War. Many who attended the First Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls and helped begin the women's rights movement had already been involved in anti-slavery work. The anti-slavery movement had peaceful beginnings, but became increasingly violent with the approach of the Civil War. As for the women who were struggling for women's rights, they possessed "…neither the ballot nor the bullet" to effect social change.

The park Visitor Center is located in downtown Seneca Falls at 136 Fall Street. Admission to the Visitor Center and to the exhibit and performance is $3.00 for adults, 17 years of age and older, and is free to children under 17. All valid Golden Age, Golden, Eagle, and Golden Access passes are accepted for free entrance, as well as the National Parks Pass and the Women's Rights National Park Pass. The Visitor Center is handicapped accessible.
