White-Breasted Nuthatch - Sitta carolinensis
Nuthatches
are active birds that can be seen hopping down the trunk of trees head-first.
The white-breasted nuthatch is larger than the red-breasted variety. Both
can be seen year-round at Wind Cave National Park. Often they can be seen
pecking at the bark of trees to find insects, although they also can eat
seeds and nuts. Their nasal, yank-yank call can be heard near the visitor
center and in forested areas throughout the park.
