Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra)
Mallard - Anas platyrhynchos

MallardThe Mallard is probably North America’s most common and familiar duck species. Males are easily identified by their bright green head and neck, with brownish breast. Females are a bit more difficult, but have orange bills with black markings. Mallards can be seen in pairs or groups anyplace with abundant water source. Locations at Wind Cave include the western gate where northbound U.S. Hwy 385 exits the park at Cold Spring Creek, Reaves Gulch in the northwestern part of the park, or even at the park’s sewage treatment lagoons on U.S. Hwy 385 at the Wind Cave Canyon trailhead.
