Cave Tour

Wind Cave for the Hearing Impaired

Welcome to Wind Cave National Park. We have prepared this brochure to afford visitors with hearing impairments the opportunity to safely and enjoyably experience the resources of this park.

Please take the time to read this information carefully. If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask a ranger. Sign-language capable rangers occasionally are available.

Wind Cave was discovered in 1881. It was granted national park status by an act of Congress on January 9, 1903. The primary resource of the park is a complex maze cave that is one of the longest in the world. Currently 121.25 miles (195.13 km) of cave has been mapped and explored. There is still much cave to be discovered, and the unknown beckons to cave explorers. Wind Cave contains a variety and abundance of speleothems (cave formations) that make this place unique in the world of limestone caves.

Other important resources of Wind Cave National Park are the grasslands, ponderosa pine forests, stream-edge habitats, and all of their associated plant and animal life.

Tours of Wind Cave are offered all year, except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's days. Scheduled tours are available first-come, first-served, but special arrangements may be made in advance for visitors with special concerns. The most comprehensive offering of cave tours is available from early June to late August. Fees are charged for all scheduled tours.
