Using Molar Attrition to Age Live Prairie Dogs

Hoogland, John L. and Hutter, Janice M. 1987. Using Molar Attrition to Age Live Prairie Dogs. Journal of Wildlife Management 51. pp 393-394.

Abstract

Molar attrition was examined in 153 live black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) of known ages determined from a history of permanently marked juveniles. Based on tooth wear, molars were assigned to 3 age classes: 0.5, 1.5, and ³2.5 years. Molar attrition predicted the coorect age class for 86% (131 ÷ 153) of individuals.
