Abstract

Infanticide is the major source of juvenile mortality in the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus). Three aspects of this infanticide are unique. (a) It is extremely common, accounting for the total or partial demise of 47% of all liters born, (b) the most common killers are lactating females, and (c) the most common victims are the offspring of close genetic relatives.
