The National Park Service took over the operations of the site in 1940 (although the bill to create the National Monument was signed in 1936). Since then, archaeological excavations have pinpointed the exact location and size of the structures that stood at Waiilatpu over 150 years ago. The millpond, once used by Whitman to power a gristmill has been restored as has much of the native vegetation which would have been found in Whitman's day.
