Dedication of the Great Grave in 1897


Great Grave in 1897.
The Great Grave dedication ceremony was attended by 3000 people. A speech was given by Catherine Sager Pringle (5th woman from left in photo), one of the Sager children who had survived when her adopted parents, the Whitmans' were killed 50 years before. Survivors who attended the event included the Kimballs', the Sagers', and Mary Osborn Delaney.

Six years after its dedication, the Great Grave as it appeared in 1903. The Whitman-Eells Church was built near to this location.
