Mission
Drawn by Asahel Munger in 1840.
Who were the Mungers?
The Mungers and Griffins were independent missionaries
who traveled to the Oregon Country in 1839. The two couples hoped
to settle with a local tribe and become self-sufficient. After arriving
in the area, these missionaries realized that establishing an independent
mission would be much harder than they had envisioned. Mr. Munger
decided to work for Dr. Whitman as a carpenter. The Mungers stayed
at Waiilatpu until the spring of 1841.
