Life
in Old Oregon:
Two
Paths
Often there
are two paths that lead to the same place. And sometimes two peoples
have different ways of doing the same task.
Marcus and Narcissa
Whitman came to Old Oregon in 1836 to establish a mission among
the Cayuse Indians. They found the Indian way of life different
from theirs.
The Cayuse had
their own religion and customs, and they obtained their food, clothing,
and shelter in ways that were new to the missionaries.
The Whitmans
and the Cayuse learned from each other for awhile. Then their differences
became too great and their life together ended in tragedy.
When we meet
a new people we should try to learn from their ways. If we understand
each other we can live together better.
