While the weather on the Fourth of July may have been rainy, it did not stop Guam residents and members of the Shirone Odako Museum from Shirone City, Japan from enjoying themselves. Scores of people showed up for kite-making and kite-flying demonstrations that occurred in the Asan Beach Unit of the War in the Pacific National Historical Park. The kite program was sponsored by the Guam Visitor's Bureau and the museum and participants used WAPA's park for the workshop which catered to both children and adults. The Shirone Odako Museum is the world's largest kite museum and the museum was established "in hopes of deepening the appreciation of the beauty, history, and science of the kites of Shirone, the rest of Japan, and the world in order to bring recognition to the kite as humankind's universal companion". Despite the rain, two large, 10- 12 foot kites were flown using all the participants, pulling on a 35 yard long tether. While the weather may have been unclement, the particpants from Guam and Japan really enjoyed themselves and the interesting and informative workshops and displays during this unqiue cross-cultural experience on the Fourth of July.
