Flower Planting at Asan Bay Overlook

On April 26, 2003, a planting activity took place at War in the Pacific’s Asan Bay Overlook. This event was conducted to celebrate and contribute to Earth Week. The theme for Earth Week this year was “Huguaiya I Tano- Hu” – Chamorro for “I love my island”. The event was planned to help improve the environment and beautify our park by planting at the Asan Bay Overlook.

Interpretive Ranger Ali Spittler organized the event to include the Guam Girl Scouts. The Guam Girl Scouts generously volunteered their services to put respect for the environment into action. Over 50 Girl Scouts of various ages, representing different Girl Scout troops from across the island, got their hands dirty in order to beautify the historical and scenic site. The War in the Pacific NHP worked with the Guam Girl Scouts in order to give the girls an opportunity to perform meaningful community service and to show these young women that they can make a difference in our island community while instilling respect for the environment. This event was very positively received by the Girl Scouts and this event showed the girls who participated that by working together, they really can make a difference.

Maintenance Supervisor Rita Powell and Interpretive Park Ranger Liz Cruz provided valuable assistance as did Girl Scout Troop leaders and helpful mothers.
