Asan Beach Damage

The Asan Beach Unit one of seven sites that make up the War in the Pacific National Historical Park suffered extensive damage by Typhoon Pongsona. Storm surge brought in sand, coral and debris covering the open field area and fallen trees blocked historic trails. Auto barriers were torn from the pavement and the storm surges uplifted asphalt from the parking lot area near Asan Point. Flying debris chipped monuments and several coconut trees were severely damaged.

The Asan Beach Unit has about six hundred and ninety (690) coconut trees. Fifty-eight coconut trees did not survive the damaging winds of Typhoon Pongsona and had to be removed. Dead coconut trees that were removed will be replaced. Park crews have been successful in clearing sand, coral, down trees, and debris so the park could open for walk-in visitation. The public is advised that the Asan Beach Unit is closed to vehicles until the parking lot damage is repaired.
