One of the very reasons for the establishment of Washita Battlefield as an NPS unit in 1997 was the integrity of its scenic vistas. Dramatically visible from the park's overlook, a series of dark red shale outcrops form a skyline along the northern horizon. While there has been relatively small-scale disturbance to the lands comprising the battle site, the geologic backdrop remains largely intact. This scenic vista contributes greatly to the integrity of the site's overall cultural landscape. Indeed, it was from behind these hills that the 7'th Cavalry under Custer rode to attack the Cheyenne camp under Chief Black Kettle. While they are not located within the boundaries of the park, it is hoped that scenic vistas to the north will not become degraded. In their present condition they provide a beautiful and stunning panorama for those who visit the site.
