Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center

The Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. from May 26 to September 30, 2006. The visitor center contains exhibits, a children's activity table, a bookstore, gift shop, and information desk. During the summer months the park offers a variety of ranger guided programs. A list of activities planned at the Kabetogama lake Visitor Center and Woodenfrog State Forest Campground are listed below. Click here for a complete list of planned activities at Voyageurs National Park for Summer 2006. A free public boat launch and picnic area are located outside the visitor center.

Summer Programs include:

North Canoe Voyage :
June 19 - August 8
Monday, 9:30 a.m. - 11 a.m. & 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Tuesday, 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
(Adult $4, Child $2)
Paddle back in time aboard a North Canoe. Learn the voyageur paddle salute, explore the life of a voyageur and learn about the Ojibwe lifestyle from an Ojibwe Native American. Minimum age is 5. We recommend participants know how to swim. Call 218-875-2111 for reservations.

Kettle Falls Day Cruise :
(Schedule and cost per person will be announced in Mid- to late May)
Voyage to historic Kettle Falls Hotel. After a pleasant 1.5 hour cruise, arrive with another 1.5 hours on land to dine at the hotel or enjoy a picnic lunch and explore the hotel and nearby dam before the return trip. Tour fees do NOT include meals.

Kettle Falls Evening Cruise :
(Schedule and cost per person will be announced in Mid- to late May)
Voyage to historic Kettle Falls Hotel on an evening trip. After a pleasant 1.5 hour cruise, arrive with another 1.5 hours on land to enjoy dinner at the hotel or bring a picnic and explore the hotel and nearby dam before the return trip. Tour fees do NOT include meals.

Sunset Wildlife Cruise :
(Schedule and cost per person will be announced in Mid- to late May)
View Kabetogama Lake's islands and scenic bays in the transforming light of sunset. Observe loons, eagles and other park wildlife. Enjoy unique sculptures while exploring the winding garden paths during a half-hour stop at the Ellsworth Rock Gardens.

Woodenfrog State Forest Campground Area

Voyage by Canoe:
June 23 - August 12
Friday & Sunday, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (FREE)
Join a ranger to learn the basics of canoeing, then set out to see nearby islands and wildlife by canoe. We provide lessons, canoes, paddles and life jackets. All from novice to expert are welcome. Meet at the Woodenfrog State Campground Boat Launch. We recommend that participants know how to swim.

Special Speaker Series :
Fridays (June 16 - August 18)
7:30 - 8:30 p.m. (free)
Sit back, relax and let a guest speaker intrigue you about the northwoods. Programs are at the Woodenfrog State Campground Refectory Building. A list of programs will be published here when it becomes available. Call 218-875-2111 for more information.

Voyageurs Adventures for Kids
June 18 - August 11
Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday (1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.)

Explore the natural world around you with a park ranger. Ask about our Junior Ranger Program. Meet at the Woodenfrog State Campground Beach Area (near the Refectory building, across from the launch ramp).

Short on Time? What to Do...

If you only have 1 hour:
View the park orientation film (summer only).
Tour the exhibits and changing season displays (summer only).
Take the short path down to the lake's edge and boat docks.
In June & July, view the blooming Showy Lady Slipper and Yellow Ladyslipper orchids out front.
Watch for wildlife in the adjacent boat basin.

2 to 4 hours:
In addition to the activities described above, you might enjoy taking a walk on the Echo Bay Trail (click here for a map) (2.5 mile loop), which begins a short drive from the park visitor center. The trail is open for cross-country skiing in the winter.
