Ash River Visitor Center

The Ash River Visitor is scheduled to open daily from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. from May 26 to September 30, 2006. The Ash River area is accessed off Highway 53 just south of the Kabetogama Lake turn-off. Drive on the scenic Ash River Trail (County Road 129) to reach the visitor center. Watch for deer along the road, they are a common sight on this winding scenic drive. The Ash River Visitor Center is located in the historic Meadwood Lodge building pictured above. There are nearby tables for picnics. A boat free public boat launch and seperate paddler access area are available here.

Lacrosse
Fridays, June 23 - August 11
1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (FREE)
Learn to play lacrosse, a game originated by the Ojibwe. Participants in this family-friendly game will use sticks to get a ball from one opponent's goal to another. Meet at the Ash River Visitor Center. Wear running shoes.

Rock Walk
Wednesdays, June 21 - August 30
2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. (FREE)
Volcanoes at Voyageurs? Join a ranger at the Ash River Visitor Center for this hour-long stroll back in time as you learn about the geologic forces that shaped Voyageurs National Park in the distant past.

Short on Time? What to Do...

If you only have 1 hour:
View the park orientation film (summer only).
Tour the exhibits and explore this historic building (summer only).
Take the short path down to the lake's edge (year-round).

2 to 4 hours
In addition to the activities described above, you might enjoy a walk on the Blind Ash Bay Trail (click here for a map) (2.5 mile loop), which can be accessed from the upper overflow parking lot, and from the Kabetogama Lake Overlook Trail.

Explore the Voyageurs Forest and Beaver Pond overlooks. These areas have designated parking along the Ash River Visitor Center access road.

Pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic below the Ash River Visitor Center.

During the winter you can snowshoe on the Sullivan Bay and Blind Ash Bay Trails.

4 or More Hours:
For an extended stay in the park consider hiking the Kab-Ash Trail, which contains 24 miles of trails for warm weather hiking and winter skiing. Call or check at a visitor center for current trail conditions.
