With over 80,000 acres of water, Voyageurs National Park is a boater's paradise. This is a unique park. With fewer than ten miles of roads, visitors must leave their cars behind for a motorboat, tour boat, canoe, houseboat, kayak, or sailboat to experience the park's waterways, islands, campsites and wilderness backcountry.

Boating in Voyageurs National Park provides great opportunities for recreation, relaxation and sightseeing, but it also requires planning and care to avoid damaging your boat on submerged rocks or getting lost in the many bays and channels. We strongly encourage visitors to acquire and bring appropriate maps while traveling in the park, and to learn how to interpret the aids to navigation provided by the U.S. Coast Guard and National Park Service. Visit the Safety link for more information.

The boating season at Voyageurs typically begins in early May with "ice-out" and continues through the summer and fall months. Ice usually begins to form on the main lakes in late November. By early January the surface of the lakes will be almost entirely frozen and will allow for winter travel by car on the park's ice road, and by snowmobile on maintained trails.

Help us keep the lakes in Voyageurs National Park free from noxious weeds that could impair recreational boating activities. Please make sure you have removed all vegetation, mud and water from other lakes before launching at Voyageurs National Park. Aquatic Exotic species are spreading rapidly throughout the country, but we still have time to protect the quality of our northern Minnesota lakes. For more information, please contact the Exotic Plant Management Coordinator at 218-283-9107 ext. 6163, or visit the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website to learn more.
