| Monument located on Union Avenue at the Memorial Arch. Also markers designating the
assaults of 22 May 1863 located on the slope between Confederate Avenue & the Jewish
Cemetery and a marker designating the camp site located off the Visitor's Center parking
area. This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. Stephen G. Burbridge's 1st Brigade
of Brig. Gen. Andrew J. Smith's 10th Division, Maj. Gen'ls John A. McClernand
(relieved of command 19 June 1863) & Edward O.C. Ord's XIII Army Corps and was
commanded by Col. Joshua J. Guppey & Lt. Col. William F. Vilas. [Refer to pages 5
& 11, Volume 4 of the WPA Monumentation Survey Books.] The 1st Brigade,
in support of Brig. Gen. William P. Benton's, 1st Brigade of Brig. Gen. Eugene
A. Carr's 14th Division, Maj. Gen'ls John A. McClernand's XIII Army Corps
attacked the north face of the 2nd Texas Lunette on Baldwin's Ferry Road on 22
May 1863, placing its colors close to that work and held its position until relieved by
Col. John B. Sanborn's 1st Brigade of Brig. Gen'l Isaac F. Quinby's 7th
Division, Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson's XVII Army Corps.
