New York State Memorial

The New York State Memorial is located on Grant Avenue at milepost 4.8 of the park tour road. The 43 foot tall obelisk was constructed from Mount Airy (NC) Granite. The memorial features two bronze inscription tablets measuring 5' 7" x 2' 4" and cost $11,636.83. Plans for the memorial were prepared by A.J. Zabriskie. The New York State Memorial was formerly dedicated on Wednesday, Oct 17, 1917, on the occasion of the National Memorial Reunion and Peace Jubilee. The memorial was formally transferred to the United States by Col. Andrew D. Baird, a veteran of the 79th New York Infantry Regiment, who served as a representative of Col. Lewis R. Stegman, chairman of the New York Monuments Commission.
