Seventy-three Confederate soliders were killed in action in the battle of
Raymond. After the battle, the townspeople interred their fallen heroes in the village
cemetery and placed a wrought-iron fence around the Confederate burial plot. In the 1980s,
headstones inscribed with the names of those who died in battle replaced earlier markers
which simply read "Unknown Confederate Soldier."
St. Mark's Episcopal Church was used as a hospital during and after the
battle in which soldiers from both sides were treated. Blood stains can still be seen on
the floor.
Across the street is the historic Hinds County Courthouse and the
Confederate soldier monument.
