The Al Scheller Scout Trail is a primitive12.5 mile foot path  which traverses the most rugged and natural areas of Vicksburg National Military Park.  It was designed as a compass course, which winds through open fields, to the bottom of steep ravines, into wooded areas and across several stream beds to locations of historical and natural interest.

The trail presents a most formidable challenge to the most experienced hikers and offers a unique learning experience for scouts who wish to improve their hiking and orientation (scouting) skills.  The hardy individuals who complete this trek will have a much better understanding and appreciation of the conditions which confronted the Union and Confederate armies that were engaged during Campaign, Siege and Defense of Vicksburg in 1863.

Please Be Prepared!  If you plan to use the trail, ALWAYS CALL BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME.   Contact park personnel at the Visitor Center for information on current trail and weather conditionsIt is important that you have the proper equipment.  You should carry a map, compass, fresh water in a canteen, first aid kit, rain gear, and wear protective clothing, especially good hiking boots.

Be advised that severe weather, flash flooding, erosion, windfalls, biting insects, poison ivy, poisonous snakes and other environmental conditions are common.   Sections of the trail may be closed without notice for safety reasons.

Avoid hiking during periods of high heat and humidity.  Do NOT use the trail during wet or rainy conditions.  Anticipate potential danger such as steep and slippery surfaces.  Study the map before you begin your hike.   Remember that the trail is primitive, it does not contain any bridges, ramps, or water bars.  The creeks and streams at the bottom of ravines are prone to flash flooding and can possess swift moving water.  They are very unpredictable and may contain underwater hazards.
