Union Soldiers and Sailors

 

The archives and records on file at Vicksburg National Military Park contain only limited information regarding Union Soldiers and Sailors.  The park does not own or have access to such items as military service, pension, or burial records.  This type of information of is typically owned and maintained by State Archives, historical associations, and the U.S. Veterans Administration. 

The following records for Union Soldiers and Sailors can be found on the park website. 

- National Cemetery, Headstones and Ledgers  
   
When known, the name, rank, unit, date of death, section and grave site number in the 
    Vicksburg National Cemetery. 

- Crew list of USS Cairo gunboat
      Enlisted men only.

- Medal of Honor Recipients at Vicksburg  
     
The names of US Soldiers and Sailors awarded the Medal of Honor and a brief description of
      their heroic actions during the Vicksburg Campaign.  

- Monuments in memory of Union (US) Commanders 
     The design, construction, and placement of monuments were often donated by
     family, friends and subordinates of the leader.  Some Union (United States) officers are 
     not represented on the battlefield.
