CIVIL WAR Glossary

ABATIS:   A barricade created from felled trees which have their branches extending towards the path of expected enemy attack. 
EMBRASURE:  An opening cut in a parapet to enable artillery to fire while still under protection of the parapet.
GABION:  A cylindrical basket which is open at both ends. When filled with dirt, it can be used as a revetment to form parapets of the trenches.
IRONCLAD:  A 19th-century warship having sides armored with metal plates.
LUNETTE: A crescent-shaped earthwork lunette_s.jpg (6340 bytes)
PARAPET:  A protective wall of logs, sandbags, or gabions.   Approximately four feet high with a shallow ditch behind it and dirt packed against the exterior side. 
REDAN:  A triangular earthwork used to cover a point in its rear, such as a bridge or river ford. redan_s.jpg (6984 bytes)
REDOUBT:  A square or rectangular earthwork redoubt1_s.jpg (6500 bytes)
SAP:  A zig-zag trench constructed perpendicular to an enemy fortification, for the purpose of advancing closer to the enemy lines without assaulting.
SAP ROLLER:  A large gabion, approximately six feet long and four feet in diameter.  Generally packed with twigs or cotton, and rolled at the head of a sap to protect the men who are digging the trench.
