Civil War Soldier Information

Of the nearly 3.5 million soldiers involved in the Civil War only 75,000 were regulars of the United States or Confederate military forces. The vast majority of soldiers and sailors were volunteers from state organized units.   As volunteer units, they were not directly attached to the Union or Confederate governments, even though many of them fought valiantly both within and outside their states.   Since the volunteers were under state command their military service records were maintained by the respective state.

If you know the state with which the soldier served, you should contact the appropriate state office for more detailed information.   To make an inquiry, send a self-address stamped envelop and a check or money order to cover the appropriate administrative and handling fees.

Include as much information as possible about the soldier or sailor:  their   full name, enlistment date, enlistment place, unit, home county, town, city, age, place of burial etc.   The more information you include the better chance they will have of finding information about your ancestor.
