| This unit was attached to Maj. A.H. Chalmers' 18th Battalion Mississippi
Cavalry of Brig. Gen. James R. Chalmers' 5th Military District (headquartered
at Panola, MS), Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Department of the West and was commanded by W.R.
Mitchell. Originally Mitchell's Mississippi Partisan Rangers, this organization was
redesignated as Co. A, 18th Battalion Mississippi Cavalry State Troops. [Refer
