Troops in the Defense of Vicksburg - Confederate

17th Louisiana Infantry

 

Multiple monument located on the north side of Confederate Avenue approximately .6 mile east of the Tennessee Memorial. Also a trench marker located on the north side of Confederate Avenue approximately .4 mile east of the Tennessee Memorial. At the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou this unit was attached to Col. Allen Thomas' Provisional Brigade of Brig. Gen. Stephen D. Lee's Provisional Division and was commanded by Col. Robert Richardson. Afterwards the regiment was assigned to Brig. Gen. William E. Baldwin's Brigade of Maj. Gen. Martin Luther Smith's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg and was commanded by Col. Robert Richardson, Lt. Col. Madison Rogers & Maj. W. A.
