83rd Indiana Infantry

 

Monument located on Union Avenue 250 yards south of Grant Avenue. Also a marker designating the assault of 19 May 1863 located on Graveyard Road close to the Stockade Redan and markers designating sharpshooter's lines on the ridge 400' north of Graveyard Road and 200' east of Confederate Avenue, behind the Maj. Gen. Martin Luther Smith Bust. This unit was attached to Col. Thomas Kilby Smith & Brig. Gen. Joseph A.J. Lightburn's (assumed command 24 May 1863) 2nd Brigade of Maj. Gen. Francis P. Blair's 2nd Division, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's XV Army Corps and was commanded by Col. Benjamin J. Spooner. The regiment participated in the assaults of 19 May & 22 May 1863 against the Stockade Redan. [Refer to page 470 of the WPA Monumentation Survey Books.]
