49th Indiana Infantry

 

Monument is located on Union Avenue 250 yards south of the Iowa Memorial. Also a marker designating the assaults of 22 May 1863, located 300' west of Union Avenue on the ridge above the Old Reunion Grounds. This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. Albert L. Lee (wounded 19 May 1863) & Col. James Keigwin's 1st Brigade of Brig. Gen. Peter J. Osterhaus' 9th Division, Maj. Gen'ls John A. McClernand (relieved of command 19 June 1863) & Edward O.C. Ord's XIII Army Corps and was commanded by Maj. Arthur J. Hawhe & Lt. Col. Joseph H. Thornton.
