26th Iowa Infantry
| Multiple monument located on Union Avenue approximately .6 miles west of
Grant Avenue. Also a marker designating the assaults of 19 May 1863, located on the south
side of Union Avenue at Thayer's Approach (Park Tour Stop #6); a marker designating the
assaults of 22 May 1863, located on Confederate Avenue near the head of Thayer's Approach
and a marker designating a sharpshooter's line located on the south side of Union Avenue
approximately .6 miles west of Grant Avenue. This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. John M.
Thayer's & Col. Milo Smith's 3rd Brigade of Maj. Gen. Frederick Steel's
& Brig. Gen. John M. Thayer's 1st Division, Maj. Gen'ls. William T. Sherman
& Frederick Steele's XV Army Corps and was commanded by Col. Milo Smith (Col. Smith
wore two hats.) |
