39th Georgia Infantry

 

Multiple monument located outside of Vicksburg National Military Park in the City of Vicksburg on the west side of Mission 66 approximately .1 mile south of Indiana Avenue. Also an iron marker on the southeast corner of Mission 66 and Indiana Avenue. This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. Alfred Cumming’s 3rd Brigade of Maj. Gen. Carter L. Stevenson’s Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton’s Army of Vicksburg and was commanded by Col. J. T. McConnell (wounded 16 May 1863) & Lt. Col. J. F. B. Jackson. Lt. J. M. Brotherton was killed in action at the Battle of Champion Hill, 16 May 1863. Lt. J. R. Redmond was killed & Lt. J. M. Bates died of wounds in the defense of Vicksburg.
