Oakland
was the redezvous point for the commands of Confederate Brig. Gen. John
S. Marmaduke and Maj. Gen. Sterling Price as they marched toward Helena.
Marmakduke's cavalry reached the town on June 26, 1863, while Price's
infantry arrived on the 29th.

This
site has local significance because it is associated with military activities
and events that achieved or affected important local objectives of the
Vicksburg campaign.

This
