55th Alabama Infantry
| This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. Abraham Buford's 2nd Brigade of Maj.
Gen. William Wing Loring's Division, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Army of Vicksburg and
was commanded by Col. John Snodgrass. At the beginning of the Vicksburg Campaign the
brigade, less the 54th Alabama and the 55th Alabama was at Port Hudson, LA. The
55th Alabama was retained by Loring at Meridian, MS as a mobile reserve. When Buford's
brigade was reorganized and ordered to Tullahoma, TN on or about 15 April 1863 and then
recalled on 18 April 1863, both regiments were reattached to the brigade and participated
in the Battle of Champion Hill on 16 May 1863. On 19 May 1863, the division arrived at
Jackson, MS and was attached to Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Relief, Department of
