Juan Bautista Estelric
Misionero (OFM)

Residence: Tumacácori

Race or Tribe:  Catalan

Notes:  Padre Estelric was born 24 November 1784 at the villa of Muro on the island of Mallorca.  He was described as slender and swarthy with black hair and eyes.  He took the Franciscan habit on 21 February 1801 in the Convento de Santa María de los Ángeles de Jesus  in Palma, Mallorca.  He sailed for the overseas missions in November, 1812, and came to the College of Querétaro.  He arrived at Tumacácori in December, 1820, a member of the notorious mission of 1810-1813.  He went to Magdalena in May 1819 before he came to Tumacácori.  He left Tumacácori in May 1822, due to scandal, and lived at the Caborca visita of Busanic.  From there he went to the Presidio of Santa Cruz, then to Saric, and then affiliated himself with the Jalisco Province and continued his ministry at Mátape, Horcasitas, Bacadéguachi, and Guesavas in east central Sonora.  He had decided to finish the Franciscan church at Tumacácori by whatever means necessary, but had to leave because of the scandals of his living arrangements.
