Jesuit Priests
Pedro Rafael Díaz
Misionero (IHS)

Residence:  Guevavi

Race or Tribe:  Mexicano (Mexican)

Notes:  Padre Díaz was born in Mexico on February 12, 1738. He arrived in the Pimería Alta in 1766 and was assigned to Guevavi to replace Padre Ximeno, who was seriously ill at the time. When the ailing priest regained his health, Padre Díaz was re-assigned to help out at Átil and Tubutama. He died at Ixtlán, Nayarit, Mexico on September 14, 1768 as a result of the death march through the coastal jungle during the expulsion of the Jesuits. He was the fifth of the seven priests whose names appear in the Guevavi and Suamca mission records (Nicolás Perera, Alexandro Rapicani, Francisco Hlava, Juan Nentvig, Pedro Díaz, Manuel Aguirre, and Bartolomé Saenz) to die as a result of that forced march. He was thirty years, seven months, and two days of age at the time.
