Díaz was born in May of 1736, but the exact day is unknown at this
time. He went to Querétaro in 1763 from where he was transferred
to the Pimería Alta in May of 1768. He served at Tubutama
and was later stationed at Caborca, from where
he left on the exploratory expedition of Juan Bautista de Anza to Alta
California in 1774. Returning from there he was sent to Baja California
where he became president of those missions in 1775. He was later assigned
to assist Padre Garcés in establishing
the missions on the Colorado River. One of four missionaries to die in
the massacre near present day Yuma, Arizona (Francisco Garcés, Juan
Barreneche, José Moreno, and Juan
Díaz), he was killed on July 17, 1781.
