Joachín Antonio Belarde
Misionero (OFM)

Residence: Tumacácori

Race or Tribe:  Vizcaino (Basque)

Notes:  Padre Belarde died at the age of 35, so he would have been born in 1746 in Vitoria, Spain. He had blue eyes and brown hair and was five feet six inches tall.  He became a Franciscan at Convento Grande in Vitoria in 1764 and volunteered for a mission with the College of Querétaro.  Before sailing for the new world he was ordained in Cadiz while waiting for passage.  He came to Sonora in 1773 and ministered to the Seris at Pitic and at San Jose de los Pimas.  In the fall of 1776 he was among the displaced friars at Ímuris.  From there he went to San Xavier del Bac and then Tumacácori, where he arrived at least as early as September, 1777.  He left for San Xavier in the spring of 1779.
