Barreneche was born in 1749 in Lacazor, Navarra, Spain. He joined the Franciscan
Order in Havana, Cuba in 1768 and was assigned to the College of Querétaro,
where he remained until his fatal assignment to assist Padre
Garcés on the Colorado River. One of four missionaries to die
in the massacre near present day Yuma, Arizona (Francisco Garcés,
Juan Barreneche, José Moreno, and Juan
Díaz), he was killed on July 19, 1781.
