Antonio de Anza, father
and legal administrator for Don Juan Bautista de Anza, presently residing
in New Spain, and Don Felipe de Anza, residing at present in the city of
Cadiz: I appear before Your Honor to better present the rights of
both of the said persons, who are my sons, for the purpose of giving information
that they were had legitimately between me and my wife during our legitimate
marriage in this town (Hernani). And through my line they are legitimate
grandsons as well of Juan de Anza and Elena de Bula, his legitimate wife,
who are now dead but were residents of this town, and natives of - the
said Juan of this (town) and the said Elena of the village of Usurbil in
this Very Noble and Very Loyal Province of Guipuzcoa. They are great-grandsons
by the same line of Martín de Anza and
(f.1v)
Gracia de Elgorriaga, his legitimate wife, both of whom are now dead but were residents of this town. And they are legitimate grandsons by the maternal line of Juan de Sasoeta and Josefa de Barcaiztegui, his legitimate wife, who were residents of this town. My said sons, through these and all their parents and grandparents, both paternal and maternal, and other legitimate forebears, are known natives of this Very Noble and Very Loyal Province of Guipuzcoa and in it of the notorious houses of nobility of noblemen named Anza, located in the community of Irun; of Sasoeta in the suburb of Lasarte in the jurisdiction of this town; of Barcaiztegui in Urnieta; and of Elgorriaga in the community of Zubieta. The said persons, my sons, being native heirs and descendants, as such are noble hijos dalgo of clean and notorious blood, not corrupted by that of the Moors, Agotes, Jews, new converts to our Holy Faith, nor those being punished by the Holy Office of the Inquisition, nor any others (f.2) rejected by canonical or judicial right. This being so and knowing also that it has been the same with all the said paternal and maternal ancestors of my said sons, in the places where they have dwelt and resided, they have preserved and imparted all the honors, exemptions, prerogatives, privileges, and benefits that are kept and conferred only upon those who are notorious hijos dalgo by blood and the other referred to qualities. And lastly, I have held and possessed the offices of alderman and mayor and others of peace and war in this said town, as Your Honor knows. For the right of my said sons please receive the information established in this petition, which I place before this town, its council, recorder, and inhabitants. I entreat and implore Your Honor that they be summoned and convened together in a meeting at the town hall, granting authority to the town recorder, and in mutual agreement upon receipt of this information and in light of the same, (f.2v) judgement be passed in this said town by its council and residents that my said sons are in compliance and with the rest of their said ancestors be admitted to all the honorable occupations and offices of peace and war, placing them on the register of all the great many other blood noble hijos dalgo gentlemen. Accordingly I ask for justice by the same citations of the parochial books of this town whose entries have been copied for me according to law. Antonio de
Anza (rubric)
