Jesuit Priests
Bartholome Sáenz
Misionero (IHS)

Residence: Guevavi

Race or Tribe:  Español

Notes:  Father Saenz entered the Jesuit Order in on July 18, 1735 and was in Sonora in 1748. He served at Tubutama and Caborca when he first came to the Pimería Alta but was sent to Guevavi so Father Garrucho could calm him down after the unruly natives at Caborca had all but unnerved him. He continued to serve in the Pimería Alta after spending the summer at Guevavi with Father Garrucho. He was then assigned to Cuquiárachi where he remained until 1764. He was then assigned for a short time to Banámichi and Ures, but was back in Cuquiárachi by 1765. He helped out at Arizpe during his years at Cuquiárachi and the missions of the Sonora River Valley. He also served briefly at Sahuaripa in 1767, but was back at Cuquiárichi when he was arrested by Captain Juan Bautista de Anza during the Jesuit expulsion and marched to Mátape. There he joined the other arrested Jesuits who were then marched to Guaymas by Captain José Antonio de Vildósola. After being transported by ship from Guaymas to San Blas, he was evidently left behind as the padres marched from Tepic to Guadalajara. He died at Tequila, Jalisco on November 18, 1768 as a result of the death march through the coastal jungle. He was the last of the seven priests whose names appear in the Guevavi and Suamca mission records (Nicolás Perera, Alexandro Rapicani, Francisco Hlava, Juan Nentvig, Pedro Díaz, Manuel Aguirre, and Bartolomé Saenz) to die as a result of that forced march. He was fifty-four years, two months, and twenty-five days old at the time.
