The early Jesuit missionaries were extremely well educated. Many were our first historians and scientists. Father Kino had the equivalent to a degree in cartography and astronomy in addition to thirteen years of seminary. The Padres were also good at writing. In Spain they used to make a rubric, or fancy design, following a person's signature - a tradition that is still practiced in many parts of the Hispanic world.
