Jesuit Priests
Juan Bautista Grazhoffer
Misionero (IHS)

Residence: Guevavi

Race or Tribe:  Austriaco (Austrian)

Notes:  Padre Grazhoffer was admitted to the Society of Jesus on 27 October 1710 and professed his solemn vows at Commotau in Bohemia on 2 February 1728.  He was tall, brown-haired with a pock-marked face.  He sailed from Spain in 1730 and set out for duty in the Pimeria in mid-June 1731.  He was assigned to Guevavi, which he called San Rafael.  He was introduced to the Indians at Guevavi by Captain Anza.  He built a small physical plant there - a small house courtesy of Anza and a sturdy ramada which housed the altar.  He had four visitas - Sonoita, Arivaca, Tumacácori and Tubac.  Grazhoffer became ill and died on 26 May 1733.  The cause of his death was believed to be poisoning by the Indians.
