San
Ignacio
Race or Tribe: Español
Notes: Padre
Campos was born about 1669 in Sijena, province of Huesca, Spain. He became
a Jesuit at 15 and sailed for the New World at 23. He began his ministry
at San Ignacio in 1693 at age 24. He
buried Father Kino when he was 42.
He ministered at Guevavi from San Ignacio.
Between 1716 and 1720 he baptized 1,004 souls. He left San Ignacio
on April 9, 1722 and travelled to Mexico City, returning on May 24, 1723.
He was removed from San Ignacio by his superiors in 1736. Father
Campos died July 1, 1737 at the Jesuit College in Chihuahua. He kept
the
Pimas in contact with Christianity after Kino's
death with yearly expeditions to the west and north. He may have
been the first to record the name of Tubac in 1726 when he recorded the
baptism of a baby at the rancheria. He seemed to have travelled even
more than Father Kino.
