Teaching about the Trail of Tears A lesson plan on the Trail of Tears is available for educators and students through the National Park Service's "Teaching with Historic Places" program. The plan focuses on the John Ross House and Chieftains, the home of Major Ridge, which are national historic landmarks in Georgia. Travel and Tourism Information The Trail of Tears National Historic Trail passes through the present-day states of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. Travel and tourism information for each of these states is available on the Internet or by phone at the following sites.
Certification is a partnership that helps landowners protect and preserve their historic trail properties, and share them with others.
Challenge Cost Share is a program offering federal funding, to be matched 50/50, for preservation and interpretation/education projects along the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail.
