Geologists call this a "laminated sedimentary fossil". The black layers are fossilized algae, and the brown layers are sediments that were trapped between the layers.

What does this rock tell us? That it was deposited in shallow water, because algae needs sunlight in order to grow. For more information on the geology of Tonto National Monument, click on the link.
