Western
Glossy Snake
Arizona occidentalis
Body length: 26 - 70"
Diet: Lizards, snakes, and small mammals
The western glossy snake is one of several "mystery reptiles" at Tonto
National Monument. Because they have been observed nearby, on Windy Hill Road,
we believe they occur here as well. However, none have ever been verified here.
The most likely habitat for this species is in sandy areas northeast of Route
188.
When agitated, glossy snakes and several other species will vibrate their tails
rapidly. When dry plants are present, the sound is not unlike that of a rattlesnake.
Yet these snakes are small and harmless, and rarely bite.
