Mexican Spotted Owl

Diet: Birds, reptiles, and insects
Voice: A series of 3 or 4 hesitant dog-like barks and cries
Nest: A tree or rock cavity or abandoned hawk's nest. 2 or 3 white eggs.

This large owl is becoming more rare due to habitat destruction. It inhabits thickly wooded canyons and humid forests. Both subspecies of Spotted Owl in the US -- the Northern Spotted Owl and the Mexican Spotted Owl -- are on the US Endangered Species List.
