Height: to 16"
Flowers: pale blue to violet; pealike, to 1/2" long; in elongated cluster; followed by beanlike pod to 1 1/2" long
Leaves: dark green, cluster of 5 - 9 leaflets to 3" long; 1/8" wide
Blooms: January - May
Elevation: Below 3000'
Habitat: Desert roadsides, slopes, and mesas

The leaves follow the sun all day, then fold up at night. This perennial is a favorite of bees. Like other legumes, it improves the soil.

Another species at Tonto National Monument, Arroyo Lupine, looks very similar, but leaflets are wider and more rounded at the tip.
